Interview: DJ Chucky Brown Waxes Nostalgic

In our continuing interview series to get you more in the know of our DJs at Brooklyn Radio, we talked this week to DJ Chucky Brown of The Shake Up about his dad’s huge record collection, growing up in Queens, and playing for girls gone naked on MTV.

You come from a great New York City rock background. What was it like growing up in Queens with a record collector as a dad?

This dude was a hippie that never grew up. From what I heard he used to go to shows seven days a week, along with his many vices, which he went cold turkey upon my birth. He used to get between 50 to a hundred records a week. He collected everything from punk to disco to hip-hop. He had to have anything that was considered popular. There was music playing in the house most of the time, and his personal preference was local punk. i.e. Ramones, NY Dolls, Blondie, and the like. There was so much musical diversity it really kept me stimulated. I was heavy into metal during my high school years. Queens had Lamour East, which was right down the block from our house.
