MIH Ventures presents: “Heatwave 9.0″ BBQ

Sunday, July 19th:

bbq_4

Okay for two months now folks have been “Googlin’ “ hard in search of the damn date this huge annually held picnic is being held that my good friends over at MIH Ventures does! You would think folks NEVER ate barbecued food before in their life! Well get the napkins ready cause guess what? I know exactly when it’s going down. Yes, “Heatwave 9.0″ (the 9th one as you can see based on the title) will be (drum roll please…) Sunday, July 19th this year. From what I know, it’ll be held in the SAME location it’s held EVERY year, which is the first big lawn in Prospect Park (Flatbush/BK library enterance).

Who organized this event and can be held responsible for the absurd amounts of trash left behind in the park?

  2. Respect says:

Please respect the rules of NYC Parks and get the appropriate permit when holding such a large event in Prospect Park.

    http://www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/32/29/32_29_gk_park_mess.html

  3. you guys suck says:

thank you for leaving a ridiculous amount of trash for other people to clean up and leftover food to attract rats

NEXT year I’ll be “googlin” to find the date of this event so I can do whatever possible to put a stop to it.

  4. Keep Prospect Park Clean! says:

Your group left behind a huge disgusting mess in Prospect Park. Don’t you have any manners or respect for your neighbors? Please do not come back to our park again. You are not welcome back.

  5. KevinV says:

You guys are horrible! Take responsibility for your trash!! You should always leave the park cleaner than it was when you arrived.

  6. KevinV says:

    Btw…this event was held by:
    MIH Ventures
    http://www.mihventures.com/

And the following companies were sponsors, and should be held accountable too:

    Brooklyn Circus – http://www.thebrooklyncircus.blogspot.com
    Pieces Boutique – http://www.piecesofbklyn.com
    KISER – http://www.kiserny.com

  7. chef says:

    This group is disgusting.
the amount of trash left by these stupid people is appalling.
Is this a lesson the adults give their children?
    they should be fined .

  8. T. Davessonm says:

    Prof???? Sucks.
    Shame!

  9. hendrix says:

Unbelievable that people can just throw crap around and not even care about the state of how you left it..It’s all over brooklyn paper and the post about trying to go after this group for never even applying for a permit. Kids showed up in the morning from all over brooklyn to use that lawn for day-camp.. Thanks for the trash where do you live so i can throw crap all over your lawn..

  10. Kelly says:

    LET THE MADNESS CONTINUE!

These people are that organized. They have google seached the MIH event and have been posting on tons of blogs.

Even if you had nothing to do w/the garbage left in the park (like myself), “YOU PEOPLE” will be blamed!

  11. Kelly says:

    Ps… I LIVE in PARK SLOPE…

    BORN AND RAISED!!

  12. GiGi says:

well, for all the complaints above:

    1) if this event has been going on for 9 years(and this one was the 9th)somebody gave permission to do so.As matter of fact, police came and left without saying a word.
    2) for the trash:we apologize for the people that didn’t clean behind themself.it happens in any kind of public event…it happens also at the gym, offices, stadium….unfortunaly we all live in a society that it’s not very caring or mind for others, or not?
It happend to me to lay down in Prospect Park near by a dog’s s++t…don’t we have a law that dog’s owner must to clean after their own pet?yes, we do!!!

This is for KEEP PROSPECT PARK CLEAN:
who do you refer to with DON’T COME BACK TO OUR PARK AGAIN???….since when a public park is yours???who are you???

    xoxo

  13. aargh says:

    Pigs!

  14. CR says:

GiGi – “since when a public park is yours???who are you???”

EXACTLY! The park is yours, but it’s also everyone else’s. That means that in the interest of being a good Samaritan you clean up after yourself. (Unless you can find some way to justify that a child needs to sit around in your trash the next day.)

Also: “it happens in any kind of public event…it happens also at the gym, offices, stadium” Right, but those places are PRIVATE not public, and they have staff that’s paid to clean up. The Park also has staff to clean up after you – provided you have a permit, and provided you do your part by collecting all the trash in a central location. However, it should also be stated if you’re working in an office or wherever, you can’t go making a huge mess and not be expected to clean it up. Sure, someone may come in and empty your trash can at night… but they’re likely not going to clean if you toss trash all over your office (which you probably wouldn’t do in the first place since it’s *yours*.) Not cleaning up after yourself would lead to some sort of reprimand in most situations.

I’m doubting MIH had the proper permits this year. They may have had them in years past, but I’m guessing they didn’t this year. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. If they didn’t, they should be charged for the entire clean-up fee and some sort of additional fine on top of that.

Most people, GiGi, would be embarrassed to create a huge mess in a public place and then just walk away. They wouldn’t want people to say: “Look at the mess that “X group of people” left behind – how disgusting.”

Learn to take responsibility for your actions.

  15. Loser Animals says:

PLEASE DON’T RETURN TO THE PARK! Do you leave your apartments in the same condition? Why did I ask… of course you do.

  16. BKLYNSTAR says:

Im quite sure the comments left above are made of those that work on the clean up staff. courtesy announcements were made and its sad that people couldn’t clean up behind themselves. Once again as stated by GIGi above this is a public event open to everybody and unfortunately garbage is left behind. what’s sad is that the only thing you can report about is the garbage left behind but never once has someone acknowledged that they managed to pull off a peaceful event drawing out hundreds of people that were able to socialize and network in a peaceful manner. So sad that all you can do is talk about the negative

  17. The M Report says:

I don’t get. I truly understand the outrage some may have over this trash fiasco, but how are the organizers of this event pigs? It’s the few bad apple attendees that are to blame. I was brought to my attention that the SAME incident with garbage happened on the fourth of July, is America the blame for holding the holiday? Over 2,000 + folks attend this event for the last NINE Yrs. if the park is aware of this proper trash bins should be in place to accomodate the extra ppl. It’s NOT like the park does not know this event happens EVERY year. Though the organizer do their personal best to clean up, they can’t be held accountable for everybody that happens to be in the park and hear to the bbq. Even non violent protest have a few amongst them that rather riot. Thanks for your comment however.

  18. Fuck the Heatwave says:

We showed up to use the park only to find what amounted to a huge rave going on in the lawn area, open grills, huge speakers, etc. Next year, get the permit so that the Parks Department has staff on hand to properly clean up. That’s all we’re saying. It was a cool party with a well-behaved crowd but this cuts into the NYC Parks budget which they don’t get much of in the first place. Respect!

  19. Cameron says:

I wonder if the authors of these fervent comments can rally around a similar yet much more prevalent issue afflicting our fine borough…stray dog-feces!

While reflecting on the Woodstock Festival in 1969, are you FerventOnes thinking fond thoughts I wonder? Guess what Bethel NY looked like during that aftermath.
Though the two aren’t the completely comparable and the state of the park after MIH Ventures sponsored BBQ was nothing to be proud of, the event itself was a positive, peaceful and well attended by hundreds of taxpayers (judging by the photos) who, just like you, have a right to enjoy our park. Perhaps you were too afraid to join the festivities and need something to be upset about.

I digress, now think about how often your shoe encounters dog doo.

  20. Hilarious says:

OMG this is hilarious!!! I live near the park, occasionally run there in the morning but going ballistically bonkers over some trash from what appeared to be a really fun BBQ?

These Park Slope folks need to get a life. There are people paid by all of our tax dollars (not just Park Slope residents) to clean up the parks. Its their JOB. Not to excuse anyone who left trash but seriously…its not that serious. It got cleaned up. Get over it.

  21. I don’t know who’s worse–the folks who trashed the park, or the cops who stood around and let it happen. This sleazy MIH outfit should be ashamed of themselves, and so should the NYPD for not cracking down before it was completely out of hand. And don’t get me started on the pigs who left the Long Meadow under a blanket of crap. Prospect Park is a shared public treasure, and we all share responsibility for keeping it clean. Full litter baskets are NO EXCUSE; in plenty of state parks, it’s “carry-in, carry-out” with NO available containers for trash, and hikers “get it” and comply. So…get it?

  22. Miss Peacock says:

This whole conversation is silly. For those ppl calling the attendees of the Heatwave BBQ pigs, you need to get a life…and do it quickly!
The real ppl responsible for the mess are the promoters who over-promoted without giving the Parks dept. the accurate notice of just how many ppl were to be in attendance. Consequently, the Parks Dept. could not respond effectively to pick up the trash in time. When hundreds of thousands descend on Time Square during New Year’s Eve, they do not all pick up after themselves – that’s virtually impossible and there are not even enuff trash cans in New York to accommodate all that trash. I don’t hear anybody complaining about the huge mess revelers left in Times Square DURING EVERY SINGLE NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION! U know why? Because the city expects the mess, they pay the Sanitation workers overtime and guess what?, By 7 am the next morning, you can’t even tell that just a few hours ago there was tons of confetti and hot dog wrappers on the ground!

So stop these Karl-Rovian, mean-spirited attacks on ppl who were just trying to have a good time at a Sunday afternoon BBQ!

  23. Miss Peacock says:

    One more thing….

The people mounting these complaints are the same people with their 20 dogs in a 2 bedroom Park Slope apt who constantly leave dog sh*t all over Prospect Park, Grand Army Plaza and any available piece of pavement they can find – disregarding the law in the process. It’s a case of the guy with the log in his eye pointing out the speck of sawdust in his neighbor’s eye.
I can’t even walk a block in Park Slope without the smell of dog piss and dog doo assaulting my already-sensitive olfactory receptors – and that’s even after it’s already been cleaned up!

…I am reluctant to conjecture, but nevertheless am still compelled to conjecture that perhaps all this hoopla(noted on many websites in addition to this one) over the mess on the great lawn arises from the fact that this was a majority black event?
Is it just mere coincidence that the promoters are all black and the majority of the attendees as well? hmmm…i wonder…

  24. cr says:

@BRKLYNSTAR – “what’s sad is that the only thing you can report about is the garbage left behind but never once has someone acknowledged that they managed to pull off a peaceful event drawing out hundreds of people that were able to socialize and network in a peaceful manner. So sad that all you can do is talk about the negative”

Seriously?!? Did you steal that from Sarah Palin’s resignation speech from two weeks ago? Hell, it’s almost Ahmenejhad level logic. Who cares that people came out and socialized and networked? Passing by in the morning I shouldn’t have known that anyone had been there the night before as there shouldn’t have been a single piece of trash on the ground. You throw the shindig, you clean it up – ALL OF IT. Oh, and you express gratitude that the event was held in a “peaceful manner” – yeah, it must be a miracle to hold an event where a fight doesn’t break out or worse… praise the lord!

@Fuck the Heatwave – “but this cuts into the NYC Parks budget which they don’t get much of in the first place” – Best comment on here so far.

@Hilarious – “There are people paid by all of our tax dollars (not just Park Slope residents) to clean up the parks. Its their JOB.” – See, that’s the WRONG attitude. It’s not other people’s job to clean up after you when you make an excessive mess – it’s YOUR job (and everyone else’s in attendence, and especially the promoter’s), and it’s the community-minded thing to do. You don’t shit in your own backyard…

@Miss Peacock – You’re half right and you’re half wrong. In the case of Times Square vs. this situation – MIH is like the Santitation dept in Times Square. Who throws the event in Times Square? The city does. Who cleans it up? The city does. So, who threw the event in the park? MIH did. So even though the Sanitation dept or parks dept is there to clean up, you don’t leave it to them. It’s embarrassing to have someone else clean up your crap.

“I can’t even walk a block in Park Slope without the smell of dog piss and dog doo assaulting my already-sensitive olfactory receptors – and that’s even after it’s already been cleaned up!” – Yes, but at least they’re making an attempt to clean it up.

And no, this isn’t a racial issue, so stop making it one.

  25. DC says:

Who the hell do these people think they are? The sense of an arrogant entitlement attitude of the party goers was over the top. The lack of manners and respect was beyond belief. The fact that they didn’t bother to get the permit is one of the indicators of the attitude. Perhaps they knew they wouldn’t get the permit once it was discovered who and what the party was about. This was definitely not back to the garden with peace, love and music but, it did look like Yasgars farm after three days of a festival. The beautiful, well kept park was turned into a GHETTO for the day as indicated by the destruction. The park does belong to everyone however, these people did not think so. Basically it felt like “get out of my way, this is my park, my party and I don’t care about anyone else”. I live on Prospect Park West and there are many gatherings of all ilks of people, never has there been such destruction, quite the contrary. People were parked at fire pumps. Where were the police in this? It was dangerous. Speeding motorcycles. People were coming out of the park drunk or drugged and yelling violence. At one point I thought gun shots were next and was prepared to hit the decks. The MIH group( I still would like to know what the letters stand for ) should be fined and forced to pay for the clean up and repair. Lets go people do the right thing.

  26. DC says:

It’s all of our jobs to enjoy and clean up the park. The parks dept. are not there to act as our maids. This was NOT COOL.

  27. Park Sloper says:

This wasn’t “a little trash” — the park looked like Hurricane Katrina. If people were inclined to be prejudice, this huge gathering of African Americans who left behind what only could be described as looking like a natural disaster — toilet paper, diapers, hot coals dumbed everywhere, broken glass, broken beer bottles, huge boxes of beer cartons, full carcasses of chickens (dogs can choke to death among other problems) — this was not a little trash. If one were inclined to prejudice — the crowd was African American and Hispanic. The neighborhood is primarily middle class white — liberals who all voted Obama. But what a representation. If someone were liberal they could take this event as a message from the Black and Hispanic community. The message is — we are selfish animals. Glad y’all had some great times, ya’ll. You only spread the worst public relations message ever.

  28. mothernotmother says:

Wednesday morning in the park. There continues to be a wretched stink from the rotting chicken bones left from the “fun” bbq. Broken glass and pieces of garbage embedded in the grass. The trash left was horrific. This was not from a few bad apples but hundreds of bad apples. But truly, the real bad guys are MIH Ventures. As a party planning company they should have taken the garbage into account. They continue to elude the press and have made no effort to publicly acknowledge their wrongdoing. They even lied about Pepsi being a sponsor. MIH Ventures must have made tons of money on this fun time. Free venue, no clean up, everyone bring their own food and booze. Hmmmm

  29. The Brooklyn Circus says:

IMPORTANT: The Brooklyn Circus was NOT A SPONSOR or organizer of the MIH Ventures BBQ 2009. We attended the event after our 7pm store closing and left the park before dark. Therefore, we did not and could not contribute to the littering issue. We are ABSOLUTELY AGAINST littering as it is a poor sign of the BKc Style and Character that we live by.www.thebkcirus.com

  30. grassshack says:

This is not a race issue or a dog issue, it’s about respect for yourselves and others. if you want people to have a positive impression of you, you don’t leave trash behind as your trademark.

this was selfish behavior on a mass scale and MIH Ventures was the sponsor of it.

  31. mothernotmother says:

Glad to see that one so-called sponsor has made a public statement. Hey, Brooklyn Circus was not a sponsor? You guys should sue MIH Ventures for using your name. Bunch of criminals.

  33. The Brooklyn Circus says:

Please read the date of the posted ad from blogspot. 2007!!!!! Two years ago when we sponsored the incident free event. Our website is http://www.thebkcircus.com and not the blogspot where the ad from 2007 was pulled.

  34. Jojo says:

The people that attended this event and left that kind of mess are ANIMALS!!! Way to trash a perfectly good park such that children are left to play on BROKEN GLASS Monday morning.

    Filthy ANIMALS!!

  35. brooklyn gyal says:

ppl please, be upset at the fact that the trash was left yes, but also be aware that if you read the daily news, there WAS in fact a permit and the city did know that there was a bbq going on, maybe not to this extent but they knew. and I dare to ask, would there be such an outrage by you “slopers” if people mainly entered on the east side of the park where “they” live and not on your precious prospect park west.

i have never seen such side eyed racist comments before in my life. do you live in brooklyn or the midlands? calling them animals and the look at them on thier website so you can put a face to title animals? be mad at the city for not doing its jobs, be upset at the fact that it wasnt cleaned up, be mad if the cops didnt check to see if they could have that many people out there, HOWEVER, hold the animal comments to your self, in the long run you end up being the true animals indeed.

and by the way the prosepect park borders MANY neighborhoods dearies, and most of them are not middle class white but people of color so save it. and to compare the park to katrina, a national incident where hundreds were left dead, homeless and lives ravaged to some mess in the park which was cleaned up after one day is riduculous and you should be ashamed, how dare you…get over it and go walk your dogs around the block, fluffy will be ok with the inconvience.

  36. Bra Strap says:

To those who blamed the cops for not breaking this party up. As stated, this seemed to be a peacefull event. What reason would the cops have to tell everyone to leave? If they did, it would have been a huge race issue. They don’t want us to have any fun. And people should not have to be told to pick up their trash. It’s called Common courtesy. You bring it into the park, make sure you take it out.

  37. Takein-Takeout says:

Ok, for BKLYNSTAR, GIGI and the others of this opinion: “it happens in any kind of public event”

    No, it doesn’t.

    Ever hear of BURNINGMAN? http://burningman.com

Burningman is a yearly event held in the Nevada desert with about 30,000+ attendees. The only thing that is provided is port-o-potties, no trash cans, no dumpsters, nothing. The event lasts a full week, with raves, exhibits, food, drinking, and almost everything you can imagine under the sun. The desert is left clean. The U.S. Bureau of Land Managment has repeatedly praised BurningMan for being the cleanest event that ever gets held in Black Rock Desert. The have a simple philosophy, what you take in, you must take out. So if 30,000 people understand this in a desert which is hardly visted during the rest of the year, I am sure a small fraction of that number can do that in a park which is shared by all the residents of the City.

To those who are making this into a racial issue, FYI, BurningMan is attended by all walks of life, race, religion and sexual preference. So it’s not about any particular social group, unless SLOB is now accepted as a social group.

  38. Annie says:

Really, why leave the park a pigsty and feed into negative stereotyping? It’s a shame bcs whatever positive vibe you have got lost in the shit. THINK about it. Next time get a permit and bring trash bags to carry your stuff out or leave it by the park exits. Is that so hard? Or are you trying to prove something to the people who live by the park? Hmmmm? Maybe you should examine your motives. Grow the hell up.

  39. Drea says:

U people should turly be digusted and ashamed of yourself for leavin the mess you did at the park. I, unfortunately work at that park and had to clean up the mess you a-wholes made. You should go hide under a f***kin rock you bastards. The next you want to trash a place…make it your own backyard. Im not a hater cause I wasn’t there but I am pissed the hell off that you people felt that the park was your personal garbage disposal. I hope one day that someone treats you like the garbage you left in the park.

  40. Miss Manners says:

Maybe something positive will come out of this after all. Prospect park makes living in a tiny apartment worth it and is a resource that should be used responsibly by everyone. If an organization wants to save money by using a public space as a venue, they need to use some of that money they saved by getting a permit for a trash container and letting the participants be aware of its location.

I am a responsible dog owner and I am a member of FIDO http://www.fidobrooklyn.org/. This organization and its members believe that dog owners should clean up after their dogs and has even provided extra garbage cans so that responsible dog owners can get rid of their baggies.

If there were a similar organization for the BBQers, maybe they could provide more trash containers and the resources to clean that up. Every Monday morning the park is a mess, even the conscientious picnicker has to leave their trash near overflowing trash containers on a normal weekend.

The Parks Department doesn’t have the money to clean it all up, and with budgets tight, we need to take ownership of our public spaces and make sure everyone can enjoy a safe and clean environment

  41. THA KID says:

There is a solution to all this and MIH shood agree to pay for the cleanup. Yes i was there but we clean up our stuff!! This is ridiculous that MIH would have a BIG BBQ and in the same breathe not be responsible enough to make sure they left the park as it started. All this name calling will get you nowhere the only solution is for MIH to step up to the plate and accept responsibility for this mess and take actions to assure this will never happen again. As big of a rat problem that we have in NYC MIH should have known better and arrainged for the city to clean it up or hire their own crew to clean up. As an attendee of this BBQ i must say i feel ashamed that i even attended….

  42. Nick Mayers says:

OK its clear that there was garbage left, maybe even a lot of it based on a few pictures I’ve seen. There is absolutely no excuse for that. We can spend all day looking for someone to blame and I’d say there were a lot of people to blame, namely the the group that hosted the event and a large number of the attendees, certainly not everyone. I can truly understand why some people are upset about it, but lets not resort to the name calling and the added generalizations I’ve seen on this post. That’s just as irresponsible. No issues get solved amicably by creating others issues out of frustration or hate. If we were all sitting on a public panel to discuss this issue phrases like “you people”, “these people”, “animals”, “pigs” etc. would not be used so lets not hide behind our computers and trade insults. Let’s be responsible and fair.

MIH should make a public apology to the city and to the park neighbors and volunteer to help defray the expense it cost this great city. Then lets move on and have measures in place so that this does not happen again.

  43. MIhventures says:

In response to the media attention and blogs please find MIH’s Official Statement pertaining to the July 19th event in Prospect Park:

    http://www.mihventures.com/Statement_from_MIHventures.pdf

We hope to see everyone for the community service day in Prospect Park.

  44. Kim says:

Brooklyn Circus, you are such Uncle Toms! Instead of reprimanding these racist twitterers for their inappropriate comments, you are trying to cover up your asses. Quincy, you are and will always be a punk. I didn’t see you asking your friends to recycle or pick up trash. You are so full of it. And you are such a narcissistic chameleon. Stand up for your bros. Isn’t that what the ‘Cepts taught you?

  45. MImi says:

The main problem here as I have gone to this event several years in a row is that due to the effects of social media this event had numbers escalate that no one anticipated. This group obtains a permit every year this is fact. The event goes with out incidence every year, fact. The NYPD is there every year, fact.
Last year was the first year that I knew there was going to be a concern in reference to this annual picnic. Too many park slopers were asking what was going on. So the complainers were ready this year. The police were not going to do anything in regards to the garbage, and the people who are required to clean were of course overwhelmed because it had neverbeen like this before. MIH is probably very embarrassed and stressed because this is a free event that they host and only anticipated the best, not backlash from the community. As for the animal comments, the profanity, and name calling it is so very uneccessary. I understand the anger and the disrespectful nature the park was in, however its no different from St. Patrick’s day, NYE, or a Thanksgiving day parade. It did get cleaned up. However I think the lack of effort is also there to make you park slopers get on your self entitled, high horses to point fingers. However when you have economic and political power that is the way it goes.

  46. Rutie says:

The funny things is, it WILL happen again next year, and it WILL be bigger, better, more BBQ,and hopefully cleaner…peace love ..live

  47. the_dog says:

What I find troubling in this debate is the self-infantilization, the avoidance of responsibility, taken by those who created the stinking pile of trash. Criticism is now ‘racist’, the prerogative of those who hold ‘economic power’. We had some fun, someone else cleaned it up, so if you have a problem, it’s because you’re racist. Incredible.

  48. Ada says:

broken bottles and empty cocaine bags left for my kids to find in the park. good job!

obama would be so proud of you brothers!

  49. Ninedees says:

All of you people leaving these ridiculous comments about trash being left in the park, shut the F#ck up!

This is a huge event that takes place in Prospect Park, where there is never any violent acts occurring (ever), people from other boroughs and other states come to network and have a good time…and all you can complain about is trash; again as I mentioned above (Shut the F…) This is the first time that there was trash left behind due to the magnitude of people that were there!
