In our inaugural year, we presented ourselves with a challenge worthy of our namesake – to create and launch an awards program that seeks artists who embody not just creative talent, not just persistence in the face of obstacles, but are also generous of spirit and good of heart. We were thrilled when we saw the caliber of the artists applying to our program, and knew our panel of film/tv professionals would have a hard time choosing who should receive cash grants. With the generous donations we received over the past year, we were able to provide cash grants to five of our talented applicants.
Saturday, November 21st:
Desiree Godsell and Lia McPherson come together to present their adventures as transplants living in Brooklyn, New York. With Godsell hailing from Houston, Texas and McPherson from Detroit, Michigan their experiences in their respective birthplaces have shaped very unique viewpoints about life, arts and culture. And today just like many other young artist having moved to New York City in search of cultivating their artistry, their work is being shaped by Brooklyn and all of its eccentricities. This weekend we will be at the 32nd Annual Dance Africa Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The festival features a marketplace of over 250 vendors from all over the world selling everything from one of a kind fashion designs to African sculptures. The marketplace will also feature a varied assortment of food vendors.
In honor of the Notorious B.I.G. ’s Birthday on May 21st, I have decided to leave Brooklyn and focus the spotlight on 5Pointz Aerosol Art Center, Inc in Long Island City. The name 5Pointz signifies the five boroughs coming together as one but, because of its reputation as an epicenter of the graffiti scene, the industrial complex has actually united aerosol artists from across the world. Graf artist Meres teamed with MOGA to produce a live piece for Look at Life . Check it out at SummerStage on July 18th, where it will serve as a backdrop for Q-Tip’s performance.
